straw bale
DJAA teamed up with Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia to produce a beautiful short film on these projects, watch it here.
Straw bale — a building material ‘manufactured’ by solar energy and atmospheric carbon.
When we build with straw, we are using a local, agricultural waste product that was created by the miracle of photosynthesis - as food crops grow, they pull carbon from the atmosphere and fix it in their stalks as woody fibers. Locking this carbon into the walls of buildings is an effective strategy toward turning buildings carbon negative — meaning they sequester more carbon over their lifetime than is required to build and operate them.
